Our Shared Ōtākaro Avon River Vision
The river is part of us and we are part of the river.
It is a living part of our city.
A place of history and culture
where people gather, play, and celebrate together.
A place of learning and discovery
where traditional knowledge, science and technology meet.
A place for ideas and innovation
where we create new ways of living and connecting.
OUR VISION IS FOR THE RIVER TO CONNECT US TOGETHER –
with each other, with nature and with new possibilities.

My vision for the ‘Ōtākaro Loop Reach’, Shirley/Richmond/Dallington/Avonside area:
– 10 Shirley Road
– Dudley Creek
– Avebury House
– Richmond Community Garden
– Kai Town
– Street Art
– Sutton’s Place
– Avon-Ōtākaro Cycle Route
– River Road Park
– River Bank Centre
– Retreat Road Park
– Kerrs Reach
– Woodham Park
These complimentary attractions would take visitors from the City to the Sea, bringing communities together again, and revitalising the eastern suburbs of Christchurch, through the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor, telling the story of our Maori/Early Settler History/Heritage/Culture, and rebuild after the Christchurch earthquakes.
Horseshoe Lake Reach
As a Richmond resident, I understand the importance of flood mitigation, after going through the Dudley Creek Flood Remediation project.
I don’t think it is a good idea to have commercial food production in this area, as this needs be for storm water drainage and water recovery, so we improve the water quality in the Ōtākaro Avon River and Horseshoe Lake, which is culturally significant to Ngāi Tūāhuriri.
Horseshoe Lake is already a beautiful native habitat, we need to be protecting this area for our native species that already exist here.
Eastern Reaches
‘Fencing Travis Reserve and extending it into the Burwood Red Zone will create a significant wetland eco-sanctuary for our many endangered wetland species. Predator-proof fencing will allow the introduction of vulnerable species.’
We have Riccarton Bush in the west of Christchurch, a fenced Travis Reserve/Burwood Red Zone would be a great attraction for the east of Christchurch.
Our communities need opportunities to reconnect again.
Our footpaths and roads are damaged, we already know in Richmond that some of our streets and footpaths, with not be fixed before 10-15 years.
We need places where our children can learn to ride safely and enjoy the outdoors.
We need facilities/attractions that are accessible for all of our community.
We don’t need ‘big’ projects, that require ‘big’ consultations for ‘big’ budgets, that end up with ‘big’ delays.
What is wrong with recycling/repurposing the buildings and infrastructure we already have in our communities, in new and creative ways?
We need economic development, creating more job opportunities, and the tourists back now in our communities, not in 10 years time.
Our Ōtākaro Avon River is alive, the river is part of us and we are part of the river.
Our eastern Christchurch suburbs need help to come alive again and remember that we are:

A place for ideas and innovation where we create new ways of living and connecting.’
